Dear coffee, sorry but we can’t be best friends!

I am not a coffee drinker.

I know that can come across as disappointing to some of you who may think that writers write late at night with a coffee mug next to their laptops. I don’t follow that category. Actually, I don’t follow any category when it comes to writing.

However, I think that I get inspired in airports. There’s something magically powerful about airports I always feel; dreams, goodbyes, new hi’s, aspirations, tears, anxiety, dates, new beginnings, deep thoughts. Airports have vibes which I never catch anywhere else.

Recently I found out that I’ve got no writing rituals. I thought to myself;” hmmm, why not try to follow the rituals of other writers and go write in a cafe like they do?”

So I did. Guess what happened?

I couldn’t write.

I forced myself to drink coffee, but that wasn’t productive. I ended up inviting friends to join me over coffee and we had a non-ending chat.

If It’s safe to say that I have “light” rituals, I’ll go with having munchies while writing. Munchies in a zero noise environment! That’s my definition of inspiration.

Tell me about your writing rituals! 💜

  1. That was funny. (Careful with junk food… So tasty but so many calories…)
Writing ritual? None. I write the story in my head first. Bits and pieces. Lines. Dialogues. Structure. Chapters. And when it is written in my head I sit down at the computer. And write.

  2. I love this: “I think though that I get inspired in airports. There’s something powerful about airports which I could always feel. Dreams, goodbyes, new Hi’s, aspirations, tears, anxiety, dates, new beginnings, deep thoughts. Airports have vibes which I never catch anywhere else.”

The first time I got that feeling was at Glastonbury Festival in the age before mobile phones. The site provided a meeting point where friends could leave messages for each other so that they would meet up. Myself and my friend, who managed to bump into each other quite quickly, stayed at the meeting place for a while and enjoyed watching all the joyful reunions. It’s been a kind of game since, to create mental stories about complete strangers that we observe publicly.

My writing has no routine either. An idea comes, I make a mug of tea, I write.
